[interview] 200421 Vogue Korea May 2020 Issue
Mademoiselle Jennie, her companion dog 'Kuma' and "Vogue Land"
"JENNIE" a proper noun that showed the most exceptional presence in the past few years.
Jennie first met Vogue at the photoshoot for BLACKPINK with a sporty concept. Amid the dizzying cold, the filming took place until the middle of the night, travelling between a surfing bar in Itaewon and a Han river park.
I still remember it clearly the moment Jennie turned into a 180-degree different person in front of the camera. Staring at the viewfinder and giving a shining look like an onyx, there is no sign of hardship for a rookie musician rather she looked skillful and has this unique aura like she has accumulated it for a long time.
"I don't exactly remember when I first sang and danced in front of other people."
"I loved singing and dancing since I was young. There are many pictures of me dancing and singing in those days. I used to sing and dance with my friends."
For the past four years, Jennie has been introduced through the Vogue platform as someone who has many various charms or colors, like a chameleon. It was natural for Vogue to convey interest that the fashion and music industries are paying keen attention to global icons 'at the same time'.
Jennie had three pictorials (with Vogue Korea) including a cover shoot for the March issue with BLACKPINK, the group that she belongs to. She was invited to the front row of Chanel 2020 S/S Fashion Show last Fall and went to Paris, recorded her beautiful days on streets of Paris with a camera under the concept of 'Mademoiselle'.
"The 2019 F/W Chanel show is still so memorable." Her voice rose by half an octave when she talks about 'Chanel'.
"It would have been an honor for everyone at the show to see Karl Lagerfeld's last collection."
In an interview, Jennie frankly confessed that she had long dreamed of working with the mega brand, Chanel, but sometimes she felt pressured.
"But now I'm rather enjoying working with them. Whenever I make new visuals with my favorite brand, I feel a sense of accomplishment and pride that is different from working on music (music work)."
The 10 suits that Jennie wore today on the set are from the Chanel 2020 S/S Ready-To-Wear collection of Virginie Viard, which she personally watched at the show in Grand Palais last Fall.
It was also linked to Chanel where Jennie thought she had "broken the rules" herself as an artist.
"I've been active since I became a Chanel ambassador. I am a person who works in music, I still can't believe that I will be also active in the fashion genre."
It was also at the Chanel Seoul flagship opening ceremony a year ago when Jennie showed perfect potential as a "solo" artist. In a performance lined up alongside Pharrell Williams, not many young musicians will be able to show off their perfect presence. (Vogue broadcasted the stage and performance live on YouTube for the global community. It had a formidable number of views.)
Jennie said she listens to Rihanna's songs when she was a trainee and often looked up her live stage videos. Taking the infinite influence of an artist as an example. Now as everyone in the world knows, Rihanna has added the modifier Fashion Brand Director to her career as a successful female musician.
Vogue: "Do you have plans on launching your own fashion line?"
"Well I haven't thought about it yet, but if I start a fashion brand, I want to capture my comfortable and natural self. A brand that is easy and comfortable to wear rather than flashy?"
"There is no genre I wanted to challenge just yet other than being a musician", she added.
"I want to show my growth as a musician and an artist. If I have a chance, I also want to learn photography, more professionally. "
In fact, Jennie is also well-known for always having cameras in her bags. She said that it was fascinating to see different films come out depending on the camera in the same scenes.
"I want to capture the sky properly. Absent-mindedly looking at the beautiful sky makes me happy without realizing it. It is quite difficult to capture the pretty sky you saw with your eyes using the camera. I would like to work with Hong Jang Hyun, the photographer who is with the photoshoot today. I learn a lot everytime I shoot with him."
Jennie, who even likes film cameras and likes to listen to Chet Baker's songs on LPs, wants to go back to the '80s and '90s and experience firsthand the music and culture of that era.
On Saturday afternoon in April, it was Jennie's companion dog "Kuma" that added energy to the good-lighting studio. While Jennie posed, Jennie continued to laugh as she stumbles in front of Hong Jang-hyun's camera and sees Kuma acting as a subject as if he were also conscious of the camera. (at this moment, (she) has a pure 'mother smile'!) As the filming was halfway through, Jennie's mother visited the filming site to cheer for her daughter.
"The people who made me who I am today are my family. They are the one I can lean on whenever I have a hard time. Especially, my mother who had the biggest influence on making me who I am today, since the beginning." Jennie looked at her mother and said it with a 'daughter's smile'.
Millennial musicians, including Jennie, who was born in 1996, are using social media to passionately communicate with their fans. Jennie's Instagram currently has the largest number of followers among Korean accounts. More than 25 million fans, equivalent to the population of the Korean metropolitan area, join Jennie in her daily life in the digital world. Nevertheless, fans talk about how the artist, Jennie, has influenced their lives beyond simply listening to and consuming songs through social media. Jennie is also cleverly aware of the responsibility.
"I am sure that I have many friends who are affected because I'm a public figure. So that is how much responsibility you have to take. When I was young, I have also dreamed of seeing an artist I admired. I think I can also have an influence/impact on someone else's life."
Equipped with that sense of responsibility and creativity, the indicators of Jennie's four-year run process have truly been great.
"DDU-DU DDU-DU" has more than 1.1 billion views on YouTube, and "Kill This Love" has more than 700 million views. Japan's dome tour concert was also sold out. Whenever they break this record, l wonder what's going on in Jennie's cute little head.
"It still hasn't hit me yet because it seems like they've given us so much love that we can't even imagine." Jennie's eyes, which raised by mascara like a Persian cat, softly relaxed.
"That figure seems like it is unreal. We've been doing so well, so we should work harder from now on, right?"
Now everyone knows how hard it is to practice with tour schedules and to prepare for an album. But now Jennie replaced the hardship with happiness and gratitude.
"When I get an immediate response from fans, my heart is filled with gratitude. I get 'direct' energy at tour concerts. I can't remember any of the hard times I've been through when (fans) are passionately supporting me and loving BLACKPINK music!"
